Workshop with Simon and Bridget

I learnt a quick way to develop a concept by making a model. This method allowed me to think outside of my box and produce very special new designs. I have since used this method to develop a concept from project two and intend to implement it in the casting studio.

This week I continued to complete the model for Project 2. During the making of the second wax model, I tried a different method of making the wax object: pouring the right amount of wax into the mould and then pouring it out again, in order to make the wax object more even in every place. I found that if I only did this once, the wax model was thin in places and needed to be replenished to prevent holes from forming during the foundry process.

Moving on to firing for the ceramic part and plastering for the casting part. To cast the aluminium model using the lost wax method, I used rubber as an abrasive in the casting studio to make the wax items and then used a hot knife to change the shape of the wax. The final wax was used in the form of sticks to make the spouts and to join the items into a tree-like waxwork. Finally, a wall is built around the waxwork and plaster is poured into it.
